"I can't live like this anymore. No one’s listening, and I'm not getting the help I need." The words hit hard, and it finally registered—my pharmacy training had left me ill-equipped to address the deeper complexities of mental health. The shame set in, as the inadequacies of the system I was part of were revealed.

I couldn’t help but draw parallels to a concurrent experience with a family member under my care. For countless nights, I talked him off the ledge until finally persuading him to seek medical attention. After disclosing suicidal thoughts, he was required to stay overnight in ER. But, as I drove him home the next day, I realized we were still no further along in meeting his needs. Despite eventually finding a path to recovery, the situation left me profoundly frustrated with the health care system, vowing to do better.

I immersed myself in mental health research, dedicating much of my leisure time to devouring studies, podcasts, and related books. Combined with hearing first-hand inpatient stories in my pharmacy role, I became acutely aware of the gaps in HCP training surrounding mental health, creating voids that begged to be filled with a patient-centered approach.

Through freelance CME writing projects, I work to bridge mental health knowledge gaps, positioning compassion and shared decision-making at the forefront of every patient case. By instilling a collaborative mindset in HCPs, I hope to indirectly provide every patient with the timely mental health support they deserve.

Join me in improving the landscape of mental health care.
